About Rheidol hydro scheme
Rheidol hydro scheme is a group of hydro stations in the Rheidol valley, east of Aberystwyth. Its two stations, Rheidol and Dinas, were commissioned in 1962. The scheme was officially opened in July 1964. Its stations are traded as one unit, so their output shows here as one.
Its 50 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across one balancing mechanism unit. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey has recorded it every half hour since it was added to the list in October 2026, for the chart.
Hydro stations run on rivers and reservoirs, most of them in the Scottish Highlands. How much they generate depends on the rain and on when the grid needs them.
