About Thurrock

Thurrock is a battery storage site near Tilbury in Essex. It began operating in August 2025, according to National Grid.

Its 300 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across 3 balancing mechanism units. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

Battery stations charge when power is cheap and plentiful and discharge at the peaks, in seconds. Their output swings between charging and discharging through the day.
