About Monk Fryston

Monk Fryston is a battery storage site in North Yorkshire.

Its 320 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across 4 balancing mechanism units. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

SSE's Monk Fryston battery is still being built: SSE said in May 2026 that battery installation continues, and it had sent no power by late October 2026. The league table lists it without a rank until it is running in full.

Battery stations charge when power is cheap and plentiful and discharge at the peaks, in seconds. Their output swings between charging and discharging through the day.
