About Hawthorn Pit

Hawthorn Pit is a battery storage site near Murton in County Durham. It began operating in September 2024.

Elexon registers its one balancing mechanism unit at 60 MW, but Harmony Energy gives it 49.9 MW, and that is the capacity this page uses (50 MW to the nearest MW). Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

Battery stations charge when power is cheap and plentiful and discharge at the peaks, in seconds. Their output swings between charging and discharging through the day.
