About Breach Solar Farm

Breach Solar Farm is a 50 MW solar farm near Burwell in Cambridgeshire. It has been operational since June 2024, according to Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust, which owns it (the planning database gives December 2023).

Its 50 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across one balancing mechanism unit. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart. The live percentage uses this registered figure, not the 67 MW installed that the planning database gives.

Solar farms generate in daylight only: their output climbs from sunrise to a midday peak and falls to zero at dusk, higher on clear days and in summer. Few solar farms report their output one by one: Breach Solar Farm is one of only eight in Great Britain that do, while the government lists 1,386 as operating. Why so few?
