Britain's solar farms, live

Eight of Britain's solar farms report their own output to Elexon, 662 MW between them, led by Cleve Hill Solar Park, the biggest operating in Great Britain. What each is generating right now, on a map with the 1,380 other solar farms the government lists as operating.

Each coloured circle is one of the eight, at the position the government's Renewable Energy Planning Database gives it; its area is the farm's registered capacity and its colour how hard it is running this half hour, from the same Elexon figures as the table. The grey dots are the other solar farms the database lists as operating in Great Britain, 1,380 of them (a bigger dot, a bigger farm; two more have no position), which don't report their output one by one. Hover over or tap a farm for its figures. The same map is in the GridMonkey app: Solar farm, then Map. Map outline: Natural Earth.

"Now" is each farm's physical notification for this half hour: the output it has told the grid it is running at. Capacity is its registered generating capacity in Elexon's register, and Load is "now" as a share of it. The last 7 days column is each farm's average output as a share of its capacity, from GridMonkey's own half-hourly record; it fills in once a whole day has been recorded.

Why only eight?

Most of Britain's solar power never shows up farm by farm. The government's Renewable Energy Planning Database lists 1,386 solar farms operating in Great Britain, 10.9 GW between them, but only the few that trade in the balancing mechanism with units of their own report their output to Elexon one by one: these eight (the planning database still lists four of them as under construction, though Elexon's metered figures show them generating). The rest have no units of their own (most are connected to local distribution networks and sell through suppliers), so there is no live figure for any one of them.

Some of the biggest don't report: Llanwern (75 MW, near Newport), Shotwick (72.2 MW, on Deeside in Flintshire), Bradenstoke (69.8 MW, at MOD Lyneham in Wiltshire), Gonerby Moor (60 MW, near Grantham in Lincolnshire) and Skeeby (55 MW, near Richmond in North Yorkshire). Thirteen of the operating farms are 49.9 MW, just under the 50 MW above which a solar farm in England needed national planning consent rather than the council's; the limit rose to 100 MW on 31 December 2025.

And farms are only part of it. The UK had 23.2 GW of solar panels at the end of August 2026, on 2.1 million installations, most of them on rooftops. NESO estimates what all of them generate every half hour and Elexon publishes the estimate about two hours later, which is how this page sets the farms against all of Britain's solar. GridMonkey's pie of the national mix uses NESO's figures, so it counts every panel.
