About Thornhill

Thornhill is an open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) station at Thornhill, near Dewsbury, in West Yorkshire. It was commissioned in 1997. It starts quickly to cover peaks in demand.

Elexon registers its one balancing mechanism unit at 50 MW, but Rockland Capital gives it 40 MW, and that is the capacity this page uses. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey has recorded it every half hour since it was added to the list in October 2026, for the chart.

Gas stations follow demand: they ramp up when the wind drops or the evening peak arrives, and back off when there is plenty of wind and sun. Most are combined-cycle (CCGT); a few open-cycle turbines (OCGT) start fast to cover peaks.
