About Grain

Grain is a combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) station with open-cycle gas turbines (OCGT) on the Isle of Grain in Kent. It was commissioned in 2011.

Elexon registers its 5 balancing mechanism units at 1,464 MW in all, but Uniper gives it 1,326 MW, and that is the capacity this page uses. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

Gas stations follow demand: they ramp up when the wind drops or the evening peak arrives, and back off when there is plenty of wind and sun. Most are combined-cycle (CCGT); a few open-cycle turbines (OCGT) start fast to cover peaks.
