About Spalding Energy Expansion

Spalding Energy Expansion is an open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) station in Lincolnshire. It was commissioned in 2019. Its open-cycle gas turbine, next to Spalding power station, starts quickly to cover peaks in demand.

Its 300 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across one balancing mechanism unit. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

Gas stations follow demand: they ramp up when the wind drops or the evening peak arrives, and back off when there is plenty of wind and sun. Most are combined-cycle (CCGT); a few open-cycle turbines (OCGT) start fast to cover peaks.
