About Markinch

Markinch is a biomass power station at Markinch, near Glenrothes, in Fife. It was commissioned in 2014. It is a combined heat and power plant: it also supplies heat to the Glenrothes Energy Network.

Elexon registers its one balancing mechanism unit at 86 MW, but DUKES 5.11, the government's list of power stations, gives it 61 MW, and that is the capacity this page uses. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey has recorded it every half hour since it was added to the list in October 2026, for the chart.

Biomass stations burn wood pellets or other plant material instead of fossil fuel. The two biggest, Drax and Lynemouth, were coal-fired until they were converted.
