About Fellside

Fellside is a gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant at Sellafield in Cumbria. It was commissioned in 1993. It was built to supply steam and power to the Sellafield nuclear site; two of its three units were retired in 2019 and 2020 and have since been demolished.

Its 140 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across one balancing mechanism unit. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.

Fellside's last unit supplies the Sellafield site, and Elexon's metered figures for Fellside are below zero in every half hour from 13 to 20 October 2026: on balance it takes power from the grid rather than sending it. The league table lists it without a rank while it sends no power.

Gas stations follow demand: they ramp up when the wind drops or the evening peak arrives, and back off when there is plenty of wind and sun. Most are combined-cycle (CCGT); a few open-cycle turbines (OCGT) start fast to cover peaks.
