About Derby
Derby is an open-cycle gas turbine (OCGT) station at Sinfin in Derby. It was commissioned in 1997. It starts quickly to cover peaks in demand.
Its 56 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across one balancing mechanism unit. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey has recorded it every half hour since it was added to the list in October 2026, for the chart.
Gas stations follow demand: they ramp up when the wind drops or the evening peak arrives, and back off when there is plenty of wind and sun. Most are combined-cycle (CCGT); a few open-cycle turbines (OCGT) start fast to cover peaks.
