About Moyle

Moyle runs about 64 km from Auchencrosh, near Ballantrae, South Ayrshire, to Ballycronan More, Islandmagee, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It has been in service since 2002 (commissioned in 2001). Its limits differ by direction: Mutual Energy gives 450 MW from Scotland to Northern Ireland and 400 MW the other way.

Like all of Britain's interconnectors it carries direct current, and power can flow either way. Which way it flows is set by the electricity markets at each end: power generally flows towards whichever side's price is higher. The live figure above is Elexon's, every five minutes: positive when power is coming into Great Britain, negative when it is going out. The chart uses Elexon's half-hourly figures, which GridMonkey records every half hour.
