About Heysham 1
Heysham 1 is a nuclear power station at Heysham in Lancashire. It was commissioned in 1983. It has two advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs), each driving its own turbine generator.
Its 1,195 MW of registered generating capacity is spread across 2 balancing mechanism units. Every half hour each unit tells the grid how much it will generate (its physical notification): that is the live figure above, and GridMonkey records it every half hour for the chart.
Nuclear stations run flat out for months at a time, so their output changes little from hour to hour, until a reactor stops for refuelling or repairs.
